FOR PATIENTS & FAMILIES
Planning a stay with someone beside you
Accompanying a loved one involves everyday decisions as well as appointments. Plan for both.
Give the accompanying person a role
Decide who keeps the schedule, communicates with coordinators and manages travel bookings. Make sure the patient agrees to anyone speaking or receiving information on their behalf. The hospital will explain its own consent requirements.
Choose accommodation around the actual itinerary
Before choosing a place to stay, consider travel time to the hospital, lift access, laundry, food options and cancellation terms. Ask the hospital what support it provides for accompanying family. A nearby hotel and an inpatient family bed are different arrangements.
Leave room for changes
Ask how changes to appointments would affect interpreting, transport and accommodation charges. Agree which bookings you will manage directly and which tasks are included in a coordinator’s scope. Confirm additional costs before they are incurred.
Prepare the handover
Before leaving, check which hospital documents are ready, who is responsible for remaining administrative tasks and how to reach the relevant providers. Medical follow-up, fitness to travel and recovery instructions should come from clinicians.
This is a practical planning guide, not medical or immigration advice. Confirm clinical and entry requirements with the relevant provider or official authority.
